American Oystercatcher shaking clam out of the shell – Sandy Hook, NJ

September 24, 2013

Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area in Highlands, Monmouth County, New Jersey gives excellent opportunities of birdwatching and photographing shorebirds. With a little bit of patience, I was able to photograph this American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) pulling clam out of the water and later, with rapid head movements, shaking the clam out of the shell.

Photograph taken with a 1Dx camera and 600mm f/4 lens II + 1.4x extender III – for larger view and EXIF data, please click on the image

I hope to post-process whole series of photographs and video of the same bird searching for and eating clams. Stay tuned!
