On August 7th, Canon released long awaited firmware update to Canon EOS 7D camera. This update adds a series of new features:

  • Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
  • In-camera RAW image editing
  • In-camera Image Rating
  • In-camera JPEG resizing
  • Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
  • Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
  • GPS compatibility
  • File name customisation
  • Time zone settings
  • Faster scrolling of magnified images
  • Quick control screen during playback

Most notable feature is an extended maximum burst. This will be helpful for me in upcoming Bald Eagle season. Camera is now capable of taking 25 RAW images before slowing down. Wow, who knew this can be improved by a firmware update? Amazing. Don’t forget to that you will need a fast CF card to achieve these speeds and extend your burst shooting time! B&H Photo has a superb deal on Lexar 1000x cards right now. Best deal is a 2-pack 32GB for $238.22

This new firmware can be downloaded on Canon’s website: 7D firmware 2.0

There is only one downside of this firmware update. There is definitely no new 7D mark II camera coming in near future. I really hoped for a 7D paired with 5D mark III / 1DX autofocus system. Yes, 5DIII’s AF system is much, much better in tracking birds in-flight and also acquires focus much faster.
